ABSTRACT
The purpleheart (Peltogyne mexicana), a legume with uncertain future and faraway relatives
Solange Sotuyo
Peltogyne mexicana, called purpleheart due to the coloration of its wood, is an endemic species from Guerrero that inhabits semideciduous forests. Stands out for its excellent physicomechanical properties used in construction and crafts. However, its slow growth, deforestation and its overexploitation have taken it to be part of a long list of forest species in danger of extinction.
Keywords: Caesalpinioideae, endemic species, Leguminosae, Peltogyne, purpleheart.
