The zebrafish: my research partner against cancer

Abstract

Cancer cases and the frequency with which they occur among the population increase every year, with multiple and devastating effects for patients. Various factors and molecular mechanisms are involved in cancer progression. However, despite the great advances in cancer research, there is no single method to diagnose and treat all patients with this disease. Therefore, investigation of this complex condition requires a study model that involves multiple factors and variables, as similar as possible to what actually happens in the human body. Such a model, which also allows the study of cancer progression in a short time, will result in significant benefits for patients. This article addresses some characteristics of cancer and the advantages of using zebrafish as a study model to investigate this disease.

Gisela Ceballos Cancino, Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica, Sector Salud

Es Ingeniera Bioquímica del Instituto Tecnológico Nacional de Veracruz con Doctorado en Ciencias Biomédicas por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (unam). Actualmente es Investigadora Asociada en el Laboratorio de Genómica Funcional del Cáncer en el inmegen. Durante 17 años se ha desempeñado en la investigación científica en el área de cáncer con interés particular en comprender los mecanismos que conducen a la formación, progresión y resistencia a los tratamientos de este conjunto de enfermedades. También le interesa la divulgación y la enseñanza de la ciencia.

Es Bióloga Molecular por la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Actualmente realiza una estancia voluntaria en el Laboratorio de Genómica Funcional del Cáncer en el inmegen y es estudiante de Nutrición Aplicada por la Universidad Abierta y a Distancia de México. Es apasionada por los retos, la ciencia y la tecnología. Entre sus intereses están la tecnología médica, diseño 3D y exploración espacial.
