Abstract

The ability to remember past experiences is extremely important, since it allows us to make decisions in the present, give continuity to our lives and coherence to our personality. However, particularly negative experiences generate persistent memories that can affect our mental health, as in the case of post-traumatic stress. However, when recalled, the content of a traumatic memory can change, allowing it to be manipulated, in a positive way. The purpose of this paper is to describe reconsolidation and extinction, two neurobiological phenomena in which a memory is modified after its reactivation. These underlie therapeutic approaches such as prolonged exposure therapy, strongly recommended for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.
