Experimental research in neonatology: Is the pig the baby´s best friend?

Asphyxia during childbirth continues to be one of the causes of high disability and mortality rates in newborns worldwide. In this regard, one of the therapeutic proposals to treat this condition is neonatal hypothermia alone or in combination with several drugs or neuroprotective substances. This is due to the need to prevent the possible complications of oxygen depletion during delivery, which have been shown to occur in a significantly high percentage in those neonates who survive the event. However, although the use of hypothermia has shown satisfactory results, there is still a considerable number of individuals who do not survive; therefore, there is a need to refine the technique in views to improve the survival rate and overall prognosis of those neonates who undergo treatment. Thus, animal models with a high similarity to human newborns, such as the neonatal pig, are a useful biomedical tool to understand the therapeutic mechanism of neonatal hypothermia, as well as to carry out experiments for improving the results obtained.
