Urban development has become a priority for the growth of cities around the planet, as the new homes and workplaces are a necessity in all countries. However, the construction industry generates large environmental impacts, which has led to the need of change in the structure and modernization in the housing development industry, to work towards the implementation of sustainable development in cities and communities. To succeed in this task, different technologies and smart materials are already applied in the infrastructure and construction of real estate around the world. Therefore, in this work, alternative technologies for sustainable development are explored, such as the use of biodegradable and recycled building materials, incorporation of green roofs, energy self-sustainability, energy-efficient architecture and the use of smart windows. Its application in Mexico is still very scarce or isolated. Since, there is great opportunity for the implementation and use of existing sustainable technologies, as well as for the development of alternatives for sustainable construction.
