Erwinia amylovora: story of a superbug
Keywords:
fire blight, resistance, antibiotics, phytopathologyAbstract
Historically, fire blight (caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora) has been a benchmark in the study of plant diseases. The understanding and management of this disease has benefited phytopathology but has also led to important advances in other sciences such as biotechnology and microbiology. Today, the growing resistance of this bacterium to the antibiotics used to control it warns about the improper use of these drugs in agriculture and exposes the potential risk that this means for human health.
