he therapeutic use of medicinal plants as substitutes for drugs or in combination with them has been extensively debated in recent years due to the lack of scientific evidence to support their therapeutic effects and the scant documentation on their biological and pharmacological effects. Therefore, it is important to continue researching their therapeutic use, especially in terms of their toxicity. In Mexico, as well as around the world, medicinal plants are used as a primary treatment for moderate to mild ailments, mainly due to the lack of access and/or high costs of medicines, as well as the cultural roots of ancient medicine. The use of medicinal plants as a therapeutic alternative could be a viable option; however, it is necessary to be well informed about their use and efficacy to obtain the expected results.
