Chronic Wounds: challenges for their treatment

Abstract

People in good health do not have problems with wound closure processes; however, in the world there are millions of people with chronic wounds, which are the consequence of complex conditions. A clear example is patients with diabetes mellitus, who often suffer from complications such as diabetic ulcers, the product of a delay in the normal healing process. Several therapies help in the closure of chronic wounds, from the most traditional ones, such as the removal of dead skin, to those that include the use of artificial skin or advanced materials. However, the latter are expensive and complex treatments, which makes them little accessible, especially in developing countries. Therefore, this article addresses the challenges related to the main treatments for chronic wounds.

Profesora investigadora de tiempo completo adscrita a la Facultad de Química de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx), Licenciatura en Química Farmacéutica Biológica (UAEMex) con doctorado en ingeniería de tejidos y biomateriales por la Universidad de Sheffield en Reino Unido. Su línea de investigación se centra en Biomateriales y Regeneración de tejidos. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores del CONAHCyT.

Jaime Flores Estrada, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México

Profesor investigador de tiempo completo adscrito a la Facultad de Química de la UAEMéx, Licenciatura de Químico (UAEMéx), Doctorado en Ingeniería y Ciencia de Materiales por la UAEMor. La línea de investigación se ha enfocado en la Ciencia de Materiales, con énfasis en Polímeros y actualmente en Biopolímeros aplicados a la Ingeniería de Tejidos y Órganos.
