Antibiotics are medications that have been used for a long time. Their discovery has allowed the treatment of diseases that a few decades ago were considered deadly, with excellent results, making them an invaluable resource. However, in recent years, the term “antimicrobial resistance” has become more common. Antimicrobial resistance is of interest to the general public. It has been estimated that globally, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics could result in 300 million premature deaths from resistant bacteria by the year 2050. In this document, we describe a bit of the history of antibiotics and how resistance to these substances is generated.
