The eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano in January 2022, hundreds of times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, left a global footprint. This article highlights how a network of 11 seismometers on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, originally installed to monitor local seismic activity, recorded the seismic waves of the event over 9,300 km away. The strategic placement of these stations allowed for a detailed analysis of the duration, amplitude, and frequency content of the seismic waves. The collected information not only provides a unique perspective on the event’s impact on the Oaxaca coast but also offers a valuable opportunity to study the Earth’s interior, especially at the core-mantle interface 2900 km deep in the Pacific Ocean. This article emphasizes the importance of seismic networks in understanding global events and solving mysteries about the Earth’s internal structure.
