Smart packing in the Food Industry

Today, food loss and waste are serious threats to the sustainability of our food systems. Packaging is a component that plays an essential role in the food chain. Currently, new so-called smart packaging materials are being developed to maintain and alert about the quality of the product from its production until it reaches the consumer. These systems present elements to detect alterations: indicators of gases, freshness, maturation, and temperature, which allow providing information about the state of the food. Among the advantages of smart packaging is that it can be applied to all types of foods, especially those with short shelf lives, which leads to lower economic losses and less damage to the environment. The objective of this article is to describe the importance and the trend in the use of smart packaging in the food industry.
