The bioenergetics, mitochondria and oxidative phosphorylation
Keywords:
biochemistry, bioenergetics, mitochondria, chemiosmotic theoryAbstract
This article resumes chronologically our path on the research in the wonderful field of mitochondrial Bioenergetics carried out together by Prof. Armando Gómez-Puyou and Prof. Marietta Tuena de Gómez-Puyou. It also describes the impact of our work in the context of the development of the Chemiosmotic Theory of Peter Mitchell. Some of our contributions and those of some of the actual researchers formed in our laboratories, in the fields of mitochondrial transport and Oxidative Phosphorylation, are also described. Likewise, this text explains the impact of these works on the actual knowledge of mitochondrial metabolism and the novel 3D structure of mitochondrial cristae, besides new advances in the structure, regulation, and evolution of the bacterial and mitochondrial ATP synthase. Finally, it resumes new mitochondrial functions of great relevance, not only for cellular bioenergetics, but also for the regulation of the cellular redox state and death, and for the evolution and dynamics of mitochondrial functions and dysfunctions.
