The Impact Crater Chicxulub and the Cretaceous / Paleogene Limit
Keywords:
Chicxulub, impact craters, asteroids, comets, Solar System, Cretaceous/Paleogene boundaryAbstract
In the origin and early evolution of the Solar System, collisions, fragmentation and aggregation of different sized bodies were the process that allowed the formation of planetesimals, satellites and planets. Impacts and crater formation constitute major processes controlling the evolution of planetary surfaces in the Solar System. In this note we focus on the Chicxulub crater and the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, and the implications on crater forming impacts of asteroids and comets and the evolution of the planet and life.
