The use of Cannabis as a substance of abuse has been present throughout the history of mankind. Currently it is the most common used illicit drug worldwide; its use has generally increased among adolescents and young people, corresponding to a diminishing perception of the drug’s risks at the social level. In these groups a close relationship has been found between marijuana consumption and depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and schizophrenia as well as a reduction of cognitive skills important for learning. There are many scientific evidences linking marijuana with disease in addicts who develop addiction, tolerance and withdrawal syndrome.
It is important to mention that some cannabinoids obtained from the plant (dronabinol and nabilone) apparently have medicinal effects in the treatment of nausea after chemotherapy, cancer and multiple sclerosis pain. It is important not get confused between the effects of marijuana as a drug and the effects of some of its compounds as medication. The dispute about marijuana legalization and its recreational use are currently a common issue in the social, academic, scientific and legal fields. This article presents information about different aspects related to marijuana which could help the reader to answer the question ¿why so much controversy?
