Representation and Reality: The Archaeological Object in the Era of Digital Reproducibility
Keywords:
Digital Archaeology, New Media, Visualization, representation, Reproduction and ReproducibilityAbstract
Digital technologies have enhanced archaeological documentation and research. Similarly, new media and visualization techniques have expanded the depth and scope of methods for distributing archaeological information, raising ethical and philosophical questions about authenticity, representation, reproducibility, preservation, and education. These issues affect politics, stakeholders, and public knowledge. In this article, we explore how new technologies are and can be used to disseminate and present archaeological objects to a broader audience. The study examines issues related to representation and symbolic power, as explored by Baudrillard, Benjamin, and Deleuze (among others), as well as the ethical dilemmas posed by new visualization and production media.
