Non-caloric sweeteners are chemical substances that give a sweet taste to beverages and foods, and that are used by the food industry as additives because of these characteristics. They do not provide calories or energy, only sweetness; therefore, they do not rise blood sugar, a condition that makes them ideal for people with diseases such as diabetes, overweight and obesity. Non-caloric sweeteners can be obtained commercially in sachets to add to homemade drinks or in products that have the legend “Contains sweeteners”. It is important that we learn to consume them properly without affecting our health.
