Eating with the heart: the links between emotions and food

There are many factors, environmental and individual, that determine food selection and consumption. In particular, the so-called “negative” emotions such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger and sadness, in some people, decrease appetite. However, other people impulsively eat certain foods in the presence of these negative emotions. Consuming food “helps” them to feel better, avoiding, diminishing or coping with these emotions. This behavior is known as emotional eating. People with emotional eating select foods that taste good, usually high in calories, fat or sugar (typically unhealthy), because they provide them with pleasure and immediate reward. Emotional eating tends to increase the risk of overweight, obesity and other diseases. Because of the negative implications of emotional eating, it is important to identify it and address it with professional support. This article provides general information such topics.
