Bioactive compounds are chemical substances found within plants and their derivatives. These compounds have been of special interest in science, since they have been shown to have beneficial effects on health and diseases such as obesity and its comorbidities. The prevalence of obesity in our country is increasing, because of lifestyle changes and an unhealthy diet, such as the so-called western diet. Benefits related to the consumption of bioactive compounds are attributed on one hand to the fact that they have antioxidant protective effects and that they fight inflammation. In the other hand, they also interact with and balance the millions of microorganisms that live in our gut, known as microbiota. This is why we could consider bioactive compounds as the influencers of health. To get all its benefits, it is necessary to increase the consumption of plant-based foods of all colors in our diet, to help prevent and treat obesity and other diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
