Pesticides are used worldwide to ensure the supply of daily food and protect human health by preventing the spread of disease-carrying organisms. Despite their benefits, these substances are harmful to living beings exposed to small amounts regularly, either through the consumption of contaminated food or improper handling of products used for pest control in households. Moreover, prolonged exposure to these pesticides has been associated with chronic and acute diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative, respiratory, reproductive disorders, developmental disorders, and metabolic disorders. Currently, the development of less toxic and biodegradable pesticides is a matter of great importance globally. This article examines the role of the chemical nature of pesticides, their effects due to their excessive and prolonged use and discusses other alternatives such as essential oils that could reduce the harmful impacts on the environment and human health.
