Enfermedad de Parkinson y la pimienta: explorando su potencial terapéutico

El Parkinson es el segundo trastorno neurodegenerativo más común en el mundo, y provoca movimientos lentos, rigidez, inestabilidad postural, depresión, ansiedad y trastornos del sueño. En el cerebro de quienes lo padecen se acumulan agregados de la proteína alfa-sinucleína, junto con estrés oxidativo, inflamación crónica y muerte neuronal. Hoy no existe cura: los tratamientos disponibles sólo controlan los síntomas. Aquí entra la piperina, un compuesto de la pimienta con propiedades neuroprotectoras que ha mostrado resultados prometedores en modelos animales de Parkinson. Aún no hay ensayos clínicos en pacientes con esta enfermedad, aunque sí los hay para otros trastornos neurodegenerativos. Este artículo explora los mecanismos detrás de ese potencial protector y por qué la piperina podría convertirse en un suplemento accesible y económico, capaz de reducir complicaciones como la polifarmacia y mejorar la vida de millones de personas.
