the ship of fools, the madhouse photographers, a narrative from a psychiatric hospital by its own inhabitants-patientsAbstract
Graphic proposal of how a psychiatric hospital is seen from its bowels by its own inhabitants - long-term patients - armed with cameras. On the initiative of one of the hospital residents whose enthusiasm appeared in a comment-request "I would like to take photos of the hospital", allowed us to organize a photography workshop with the support of the UAM-X both in terms of infrastructure technical (cameras and editing equipment) and human resources (Psychology and Social Communication students in social service). After a few weeks of immensely playful graphic recording, we edited the material produced together with the photographers and we gradually realized that through the narrative in images the photographers entered into a dialogue with the end of the second chapter of the History of madness in classical times by Michel Foucault who says that the ships of the insane in the Middle Ages today became hospitals. The photographers reverse this conclusion by once again turning a hospital into a ship.
