The world faces an urgent challenge: producing enough food without depleting nature. Biodiversity loss, the climate crisis, and geopolitical tensions threaten global sustainability, affecting both the quantity and stability of what we eat. Amid this pressure, seas and oceans offer a valuable opportunity. Sustainable fishing not only protects ecosystems and species but also supports local economies, strengthens communities, and promotes responsible practices. Mexico, with its vast marine wealth, holds a privileged position to lead this transition. To achieve this, it is essential that fishing production growth remains within nature’s limits, respects the health of ecosystems and target populations, and implements solid governance systems. Food traceability and active participation from fishing communities will be key. The challenge is great but possible. If governments, scientists, fishers, consumers, and organizations work together, we can protect biodiversity and the ecosystem services we depend on, ensuring a future where sea and table are in balance.
